EMAUZY – monastery in Prague 2

On the way from Palacky Square to Podskalska Street, the monumental spire of the monastery appears on the left, which was originally called Na Slovanech because Slavic monks once served here. The monastery was established in 1347 by King - later on Emperor - Charles IV. What is interesting is the fact that five New Town churches established by Charles IV form a regular-shaped cross. This formation includes the Church of St. Catherine, the Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary Na slupi, the Church of the Virgin Mary and St. Catherine and Emauzy Monastery. All church arms intersect in the Church of St. Apollinaire.

Cestou z Palackého náměstí směrem Podskalskou se nám po levé straně objeví monumentální špice kláštera, který se původně nazýval Na Slovanech, protože zde kdysi působili slovanští řeholníci. Klášter založil roku 1347 král a pozdější císař Karel IV. Je zajímavé, že pět novoměstských kostelů, založených Karlem IV., tvoří pravidelný kříž. Patří mezi ně kostel sv. Kateřiny, kostel Zvěstování Panny Marie Na slupi, kostel Panny Marie a sv. Kateřiny a Emauzský klášter. Všechna ramena kostelů se protínají v kostele sv. Apolináře.

Milan and design

These words have belonged together ever since 1961, when the first furniture design trade fair was held in the Italian city of Milan. An association of Italian craftsmen originally stood behind the idea. Their objective was to support the export Italian furniture abroad through this untraditional exhibition. Since then, 51 years have elapsed and Milan annually welcomes the world’s finest in the field of design, thereby attracting millions of visitors.

Prague 1 boasts significant protected monuments and buildings which are the centre of attention for tourists, visitors and the actual inhabitants of Prague itself. There are 1259 buildings entered in the register of immovable cultural monuments and 23 national immovable cultural monuments. The majority are entered in the UNESCO list of world cultural heritage.

Na seznamu je 1 259 objektů zapsaných v seznamu nemovitých kulturních památek a 23 národních nemovitých kulturních památek. Většina z nich je zapsána na seznam světového kulturního dědictví UNESCO.

The 6th Annual Czech Grand Design

The award ceremony of this prestigious competition will be held at the Estates Theatre in Prague on 10 March (it will be aired on ČT 2 on 17 March from 9:00 p.m.). Visitors can already now see an untraditional exposition of jewellery, design, lighting and photographs of all of all nominated candidates at the exhibition Czech Grand Design Awards - Nomination 2011, which will be on display in the National Technical Museum in Prague until 29 April.

Slavnostní udílení cen této prestižní soutěže se bude konat ve Stavovském divadle v Praze již 10. března (záznam bude uveden 17. 3. od 21:00 na ČT 2). Návštěvníci už nyní mohou spatřit nezvyklé expozice šperků, návrhů, světel a fotografií všech nominovaných na výstavě Ceny Czech Grand Design - Nominace 2011, která se koná až do 29. dubna v Národním technickém muzeu v Praze.

The smell of old times

Long time collectors and connoisseurs of art Petr Smaha and Pavel Feigl have brought together a collection of original pieces of furniture and complete interior sets in Art Deco style from Benelux countries and France in Gallery 22. In addition to Czech Art Deco, the gallery displays gems by famous architects and artists.  One of the owners, Pavel Feigl, has invited me behind the scenes of the gallery.

Senovážné Square no. 13

The majestic flight of stairs to the lobby of the former Hypoteční banka (Mortgage bank) lead us to a building that now serves as a hotel. The staircase belongs among the most valuable items of the building boasting a neorenaissance façade. The designer Adam T. Tihany tastefully joined neoclassical elements with modern design. The building is a distinct feature of Senovážné Square and is located directly in the centre of Prague's New Town, not far from Wenceslas Square.

A fleeting memory of designer Stanislav Lachman

Surely each of have heard of the ETA Jupiter vacuum cleaner, designed by the icon of Czech industrial design, Mr. Stanislav Lachman, who passed away on 5th February 2011, at the age of 89. He has more than 1200 industrial designs on his account, the majority of which were actually completed. Several generations had the opportunity to try out household appliances, which he shaped and gave technical functions to such as irons, fans or food processors.

Určitě každý z nás už nejednou slyšel o vysavači ETA Jupiter, jehož autorem je ikona českého průmyslového designu, pan Stanislav Lachman, který zemřel 5. února 2011 ve věku 89 let. Na svém kontě má více než 1200 průmyslových návrhů, z nichž většina se realizovala. Několik generací mělo možnost vyzkoušet domácí elektrospotřebiče, kterým dal tvar a technickou funkci, ať už to byly žehličky, fény či kuchyňské roboty.

Alfa –Wenceslas Square (The New Town, No. 28)

Can you imagine how Wenceslas Square looked at the time when it still carried the name Horse Market (Koňský trh) and horses, agricultural products, decorative metalwork, materials and spices were traded? According to period photographs, we most probably would not be able to recognise certain parts of the square. Until 1877, markets were held here, a pond with a mill and well once stood at the lower part of Na Můstku, and three fountains were displayed in the centre line of the square.Fortunately, Wenceslas Square is still decorated by several historically interesting buildings and arcades, some of which we have already mentioned. Today, we will walk through Alfa arcade. 

Alfa – Václavské náměstí (Nové Město, č. 28)

Dovedete si představit, jak vypadalo Václavské náměstí v době, kdy ještě neslo název Koňský trh a obchodovalo se na něm s koňmi, zemědělskými produkty, pasířským zbožím, látkami a kořením? Podle dobových fotografií bychom některé části moderního náměstí pravděpodobně už nepoznali. Do roku 1877 se zde pořádaly trhy, ve spodní části Na Můstku byl kdysi rybník s mlýnkem a studnou, v ose náměstí byly vystavěny tři kašny.Naštěstí Václavské náměstí zdobí stále ještě několik historicky zajímavých budov a pasáží, o některých jsme se již zmínili. Dnes si projdeme pasáž Alfa.

Coal market and surroundings

Today the open spaces and market places of Old Prague look different to how our ancestors remember them. The character of inner Prague has changed within several centuries. However, some places have fortunately been saved. We can admire them and look for historical contexts.

When taking a stroll through Old Prague, we usually wander into places which surprise us with their atmosphere and hospitality. In one of the popular Prague location around Dušna Street, we took a look at the menu of original indigenous inhabitants. The thus unknown cuisine to us, which is influenced by Spanish and Portuguese conquerors and newcomers, is tasty and healthy at the same time.

What does Daniel Piršč cook from?

The talented designer Daniel Piršč completed his work at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague in 2003 and moved to South Moravia - to Mikulov, where he found a place for realising his dream - a designer studio. The studio was opened in 2005 under the name Studio Pirsc Porcelain and came with the conception, which is an alternative to batch production. Since then Daniel Piršč has been exclusively devoted to designing porcelain and has become one of the Czech designers in the field.

Talentovaný designér Daniel Piršč ukončil své působení na Vysoké škole uměleckoprůmyslové v Praze v roce 2003 a přesunul se na jih Moravy - do Mikulova. Zde našel místo pro realizaci svého snu  - autorského ateliéru. Ten otevírá v roce 2005 pod názvem Studio Pirsc Porcelain a přichází s koncepcí, která je alternativou velkosériové výroby. Od té chvíle se Daniel Piršč  věnuje výhradně  designu porcelánu a stává se jedním z českých designerů v této oblasti.

Patent na aroma

Vůně interiéru charakterizuje jeho majitele a tak bychom roli originálně zvoleného aroma neměli podceňovat. Pro atmosféru domova můžeme zvolit různé aromatické svíčky nebo lampy, to záleží na našem vkusu a požadavcích. Pokud chceme vzduch doma jen vyčistit, použijeme neutrální vůni a parfémované směsi pak podle své nálady: ovocné, květinové, kořeněné či orientální.

Na Příkopech

Prague boulevards belong among places you cannot miss in foreign and local guidebooks. Today, Na Příkopech Street belongs among the most prestigious addresses in Prague 1, however, until 1784, before Prague was united, it was just the periphery. Destruction of the city's walls and filling in the city's trenches predetermined "Příkopy" to basically becoming the most lucrative part of Prague with attractive boutiques and finance buildings.

Pražské bulváry patří k místům, která v zahraničních a tuzemských průvodcích nemůžete přehlédnout. Ulice Na Příkopech patří dnes k nejprestižnějším v Praze 1, ale do roku 1784, než došlo ke sjednocení Prahy, byla jen pouhou periferií. Zničení opevnění města a naplnění hradní příkopy předurčilo „Příkopy" k tomu, aby se staly téměř nejlukrativnější částí Prahy s atraktivními butiky a finančními domy.

Wiehl’s House

Wenceslas Square, once the Horse Market, was established in 1348 when the New Town was founded by Charles IV. It is 750 m long, and 63 m wide in the upper part and 48 m wide in the lower part. At the time, houses, workshops, malt houses and breweries surrounded the square. On the site, where Wiehl's House stands, once stood Jindřich Berk of Dubé's brewery in the 14th century. Later on it belonged to Matouš Žluticek and it was referred to as "U Žlutických". At the end of the 19th century, it was purchased by architect Antonin Wiehl, one of our most significant architects.

Václavské náměstí, kdysi Koňský trh, vzniklo roku 1348 při založení Nového Města Karlem IV. Je dlouhé 750 m a široké 63 metrů v horní a 48 metrů v dolní části. Kolem tohoto prostoru se tehdy soustředily domy, dílny, sladovny a pivovary. Na místě, kde stojí Wiehlův dům, byl koncem 14. století také pivovar Jindřicha Berky z Dubé, který později patřil Matouši Žlutickému a říkalo se mu U Žlutických. Koncem 19. stol. ho zakoupil architekt Antonín Wiehl, jeden z našich nejvýznamnějších architektů.

Suite in Milan

Once again, just as every year, furniture companies and showrooms from all around the world presented their design novelties at the Milan furniture fair Salone del Mobile 2010. New products were also presented by the Swiss company Vitra, which boasted the greatest visitor and media interest ever in the history of the trade fair.

Na milánském veletrhu nábytku Salone del Mobile 2010 se opět, jako každý rok, představily se svými designovými novinkami nábytkářské firmy a showroomy z celého světa. Nové výrobky prezentovala i švýcarská společnost Vitra, která se mohla pyšnit doposud největším zájmem návštěvníků i médií v historii veletrhu.

Café in the spirit of Cubism

We have already mentioned the architect Josef Gočár in one of the presented articles. When wandering through Prague we encounter his name in relation with the exquisite building representing Cubism. We are standing in front of the building "At the Black Madonna" (U Černé Matky Boží), which architect Josef Gočár completed in 1912.

Her clients are women from royal families, high ranking women from America and even from Europe, and the wives of wealthy entrepreneurs. Blanka Matragi primarily designs evening, wedding and engagement dresses. She is one of the few designers, who do not need to be concerned about how much their models will cost when creating them.

Talent zdědila po tatínkovi, který byl uměleckým sklářem. Nejdříve se vydala v jeho stopách a vyučila se brusičkou skla. Vystudovala střední průmyslovou školu sklářskou, poté absolvovala oděvní výtvarnictví na Vysoké škole uměleckoprůmyslové v Praze. Během studií se seznámila s Makramem Matragim a po svatbě s ním odjela do exotického Libanonu, kde si později otevřela salón Haute Couture.

The Hotel Mandarin Oriental, Prague was built on a site, whose beginnings stretch back to the 14th century, in the serene historical part of Mala Strana (the Lesser Town) on the left bank of the Vltava River. It is a complex where a Dominican monastery once stood.

The building of the former Družba Department Store, which was built on the corner of Jindřišska Street and Wenceslas Square (Prague 1) in 1971-75 according to the project of the architects Milan Vaška, Vlastibor Klimeš and Vratislav Růžička in an international style, is a significant architectural element of Wenceslas Square.

The jubilee 40th trade fair Heimtextil was held in Frankfurt on Main from January 13th to 16th. It is the largest and most significant international trade fair of furnishing fabrics, it will thus influence also interiors in our country.

Kramar´s villa

Your winter walk  in Letná Orchards will bring you to an architecturally interesting villa, bearing the name of  Karel Kramář, prominent Czech politician and the first Prime Minister of the Czechoslovak government. It is one of the villas, Kramář had built for his beloved wife Nadezhda Nikolaevna Abrikosova. The first villa was built in Crimea, because Nadezhda was a Russian,  and the third one was build in Vysoké nad Jizerou, native town of Karel Kramář. We will focus our attention on the house situated on the land  (former St Thomas Bastion) alongside  Letná Orchards, at the place of former St Mary Walls.

This year's trend in floristics is based on beauty and diversity offered by African continent. Interiors reflect ethnic motifs and mystical atmosphere. Dark-brown colour wood plays certainly its role in decorations and in combination with flowers of warm and bright colours it adds natural power and energy to the interior. The wood appears in number of different variants - from untreated to smooth, from glazed to patterned. In the Floral trend, robust shapes are used, often finished manually, with not quite perfect and regular appearance. The overall picture is finished by ethnic patterns and colour printing.

In case of the BeoVision 10 television from Bang & Olufsen, which was designed with the thought of livening up wallpapers, these words certainly ring true.

V případě televizoru BeoVision 10 od společnosti Bang & Olufsen, který byl navržen s myšlenkou na oživení tapet, rozhodně tato slova platí. Tenkého designu bylo dosaženo použitím nové LCD technologie s podsvícením okrajů diodami a umístěním kostry a reproduktorů pod LCD obrazovku. Podsvícení obrazovky zajišťuje velký počet bílých diod rozmístěných kolem okraje panelu. Světlo je pak pomocí optického světlovodného systému rovnoměrně rozvedeno kolem panelu.

Pinkas Synagogue

If we mention the Prague Jewish Quarter, which was founded in the location between the Charles Bridge and Old Town Square, we must not forget Josefov - a quarter that was a part of the most important Jewish community in the Czech lands. The Jewish quarter was integrated among the Prague cities in 1850 and named after Emperor Joseph II - Josefov. This was the source for the name of the quarter that is so popular among tourists.

An architect and architecture historian, born in Prague in 1954. After completing his studies at the Faculty of Architecture at the Czech Technical University, he worked in the Architecture Archive of the National Technical Museum from 1980 to 1990 and since then has worked in the Office of the President of the Czech Republic where he was involved in the revitalization of the castle premises. From 2000 - 2003, he worked as the Dean at the Faculty of Architecture at Liberec Technical University and has also taught at New York University in Prague since 2004.

Architekt, historik architektury, nar. v Praze v roce 1954. Po studiích Fakulty architektury ČVUT pracoval v letech 1980-1990 v Archivu architektury Národního technického muzea, od roku 1990 je zaměstnán v Kanceláři prezidenta republiky. Podílel se na revitalizaci hradního areálu. V letech 2000-2003 byl děkanem Fakulty architektury Technické univerzity v Liberci, od roku 2004 také učí na New York University v Praze.
